Vision

We envision a world where all doors are open for all women

Mission

NYWC is a community of diverse women providing resources and support to affect positive change. We deliver this in a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for all women in the community of North York and surrounding areas

Guiding Principles


The following guiding principles should inform and guide all aspects of the agency's functioning. We define our guiding principles as:

- Promoting equity, equality and social and economic justice for all women,
and
- Working within a framework of anti-oppression, anti-racism and feminism*.

*We practice feminism by:
a. asking questions from a women's perspective,
b. acknowledging a power imbalance to the disadvantage of women, and
c. demanding that women's personal experiences become recognized in public policies


Anti-Discrimination Policy

The North York Women's Centre does not permit discrimination against applicants, staff, participants or volunteers at all levels of the organization on the basis of race, religion, age, sexual orientation, ability, socio-economic background, ethnicity or family status.

The policy applies to all areas of Centre operations including recruiting, hiring, promotion, assigning of work, program delivery and volunteer activities in keeping with the principles of employment equity.

In order to ensure that the Centre's anti-discrimination policy is integrated and reflected in the work we do, the North York Women's Centre makes a commitment to:

  • Participate in multicultural/anti-racist organization development.
  • Collect data on composition of program participants, volunteers, staff and Board.
  • Remove barriers, set goals, set up evaluation mechanisms and improve practices.
  • Develop effective communications for ethno-cultural communities (e.g. translation, cultural interpreters).
  • Seek participation from communities which face discrimination in programs and staff/volunteer positions.
  • Set up procedures for dealing with incidents involving discrimination.
