Volunteer Opportunities
The North York Women's Centre welcomes your involvement as a volunteer.
You will have the opportunity to meet new people, explore your interests,
use and improve your skills. We try our best to match each person with
their first choice of volunteer position, but factors such as program
needs, specific skills, and amount of opportunities available may come
into play.
New! Facilitator Training
Are you interested in supporting other women and becoming a group co-facilitator?
The North York Women’s Centre is looking for volunteer co-facilitators
to help facilitate our support groups. If you wish to apply as a co-facilitator,
please submit a resume and complete the online volunteer application
form found on our website: www.nywc.org. After successful completion
of the Facilitator Training, a commitment to co-facilitate at least
two North York Women’s Centre programs is required. A certificate will
be presented to you at the end of your commitment. Our Facilitator Training
Program consists of 28 hours of training. A commitment to attend all
sessions is required. If you are interested in applying, please fill
out the online volunteer application. For the dates of the next Facilitator
Training, please call the North York Women's Centre and speak with our
Volunteer Coordinator.
Telephone Volunteer (10am 4pm, Monday-Thursday)
Provide information, referral, and emotional support to women who call
or drop into our center. There are some office reception and administrative
duties. A two day training is provided.
Commitment: 3 hour shift per week for a minimum of 6 months
Outreach (daytime or evenings)
Work with staff and students doing outreach in particular communities
or with certain groups. This may involve helping with displays, attending
and/or speaking a community meetings, distributing NYWC flyers, or representing
The NYWC at community events.
Commitment: minimum of 6 months times are varied depending
on need
Co-Facilitator (day or evening)
Facilitate one of The NYWC s support groups or workshops with
a co-facilitator. Previous group work experience is needed. Please
submit a cover letter and resume as well as the volunteer application
form if you wish to apply as a co-facilitator. Regular attendance at
the group is required.
Commitment: 3 hour per week for a minimum of 6 months
Legal Clinic Receptionist (7pm-9pm, Tuesdays)
Welcome women attending our Legal Clinic and help them feel at ease
while awaiting their appointment with the lawyer, and make referrals
to other supports in the community. Referral training is provided. Minimum
paperwork is required. Childminding is also a duty of the legal clinic
receptionists.
Commitment: 3-6 hours per month for a minimum of 6 months
Office Support (daytime)
About three times a year to help with our mail-out, folding brochures,
stuffing envelopes, etc.
Standing Committees
Fundraising and Promotion Committee (evening)
This very important committee develops fundraising strategies for the
Centre. It also plans promotional events. Fundraising experience an
asset.
Commitment: 3 hours per month for a minimum of 6 months
Program Committee (evening)
Meets third Tuesday of each month. Working with other women to plan
and evaluate the programs we offer at the NYWC. Experience in social
service programming an asset.
Commitment: 3 hours per month for a minimum of 6 months
Volunteer Committee (evening)
This Committee meets every Tuesday of each month, to develop and oversee
all aspects of the volunteer program at the NYWC. Volunteer experience
is an asset.
Commitment: 3 hours per month for a minimum of 6 months
Board of Directors (evening)
Members are usually nominated to the Board after demonstrating a commitment
to the Center after volunteer work. However members may be nominated
without previous work if nominee fills an identified need in Board composition
(e.g. area of expertise, reflective of the community, etc.).
Commitment: 6-10 hours per month for a 3 year term
